LGBTIQ+ Health Australia Budget Submission 2023-2024

The Australian Federal Budget for 2024-2025 will be put to Parliament in May.

This year’s LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA) submission focuses on work underway by the Federal Government to develop an LGBTIQA+ Health and Wellbeing 10-Year National Action. The Action Plan is expected to be complete later in 2024.

Our submission recommends initial and sustainable funding for the 10-Year Action Plan needs to be included in the 2024-2025 Federal Budget to allow immediate action on priorities. Credible funding will inspire continued community engagement with the Action Plan process and maintain optimism for action on LGBTIQ+ health and wellbeing disparities.

LHA has also sought core funding to underpin the sustainability of LHA to partner with Government on implementing the 10-Year Action Plan. All current LHA organisational funding ceases on or before 30 June 2025.

The submission also calls for sustainable funding and sustainable funding models for LGBTIQ+ community-controlled organisations to develop the sector and enable it to effectively support implementing the 10-Year Action Plan.

LHA particularly supports the Intersex Human Rights Australia (IHRA) call to fund an intersex community-controlled healthcare service.

Again this year, LHA has highlighted essential funding for data collection and research to monitor progress of the 10-Year-Action Plan. This includes enabling continued work on the Private Lives and Writing Themselves In projects, and help to drive national adoption of the ABS 2020 Standard for Sex, Gender, Variations of Sex Characteristics and Sexual Orientation Variables.
